CAIRO – 6 July 2017: The Egyptian Ministry of Interior has been successful throughout the past year in closing many terrorist-associated pages online, Ali Abaza, director of the Internet Service Department in the Ministry, told Egypt Today on Thursday.

So far 1,350 illicit pages have been identified, which were condemned for inciting violence and issuing calls for protest, he added.

The Ministry had the opportunity to arrest and charge 238 people in 234 individual cases, who were suspected of inciting violence through their calls for acts of terrorism.

In September 2014, the Ministry of Interior initiated a social media surveillance program to track security threats online in the desire to minimize the influence these pages may have on the vulnerable youth.
